Step 1: Smell the aroma
Always smell the tea inside the pouch before and after its brewed. Who doesn’t want a fresh and fragrant aroma after waking up from bed?! Each tea has its own unique aroma. Does it smell grassy, sweet, floral, maybe charcoal?
Step 2: Enjoy the details
Aside from smelling your tea, don’t forget to look at your teas. Do they have stems, are they broken up, how big or small are they, what is the texture like? Take a moment to appreciate the work that goes into making quality loose leaf teas. The more loose leaf teas you drink, the more you’ll be able to differentiate each tea simply by look and smell. It’s more than just drinking a cup of tea, make it a sensory and visual experience.
Step 3: Use a tea Infuser, not a tea bag
Make sure to always use infusers that are large enough for the leaves to uncurl. If there is not room for the leaves to uncurl, you will not get the full experience. Loose leaf tea needs room for the leaves to expand in order to fully release all its natural oils and flavours.
Each tea will be brewed differently depending on if it’s white, green, oolong, or black. Click here for a quick recap on how to brew loose leaf tea!
Step 4: Smell the aroma again
Once the tea has finished brewing, smell the aroma of the tea again. Does the aroma smell the same as before you’ve brewed the tea? Did you pick up any new scents after brewing the tea?
Step 5: Slurp your teas
Slurp! That’s right, slurp your tea! Yes it sounds unpleasant and in some cultures it’s considered rude, but slurping your tea is essential if you want to drink tea like a pro. Slurping helps aerate the tea, which brings out all the subtle nuances the tea has to offer. Slurping tea also helps cool down your tea, extremely important for those who want their tea immediately just like me!
Step 6: Roll the liquor and breathe out with your nose
After slurping, roll the liquor around your mouth, allowing it to coat the entire inside of your mouth. Breathe out from your nose at the same time and you will get a sensory overload of all the amazing flavours your tea has to offer. Oxygen is your friend and it will help you experience a whole new world of flavours.
Do this every time you drink tea and you will be able to enjoy your loose leaf teas on a whole new level!
